Athelstan: The First King of All England
While many kings ruled parts of what is now England, it was Athelstan, crowned in 925 AD, who is widely regarded as the first true King of all England.
The grandson of Alfred the Great, Athelstan united the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and defeated the last major Viking stronghold at the Battle of Brunanburh in 937. His rule extended over all English territories—from Northumbria to Wessex—and even earned him the recognition of kings in Wales and Scotland.
Athelstan’s reign wasn’t just about warfare. He promoted law and order, strengthened ties with Europe through diplomacy and marriage alliances, and supported the Church, helping shape the foundations of medieval English identity.
Though often overshadowed by his grandfather Alfred, Athelstan’s legacy as the founder of a unified England remains one of the most important milestones in British history.
