Featuring a profile of Queen Victoria, the Penny Black allowed letters to be prepaid for just one penny, making mail more accessible to the public and simplifying the postal system. Before this, postage was usually paid by the recipient, often based on the number of sheets and distance traveled!
Designed by Sir Rowland Hill, the Penny Black not only transformed how mail was sent—it became a symbol of progress, innovation, and the growing reach of the British Empire.
Though it was only used for a short time (due to difficulty canceling the black ink), the Penny Black remains a prized collector’s item and a proud piece of British history.
